Tempering Process

Glass is heated uniformly to 620–680°C in an electric furnace, then rapidly quenched with controlled cold air jets. This process creates a compressive stress layer on the glass surface that gives toughened glass its characteristic strength and safety breakage pattern (safe granular fragments vs. dangerous shards).

Breakage Pattern

When toughened glass breaks, it fractures into small, relatively harmless rounded granules rather than sharp jagged pieces — significantly reducing the risk of serious injury. This property is required by safety glass standards worldwide.

Design Considerations

All cutting, drilling, and edge work must be done BEFORE tempering. Once tempered, the glass cannot be cut or re-worked. Any required holes, notches, or cutouts must be specified at the time of order. Tolerance: ±1mm on dimensions.
